KYOTO, YOUR HOST CITY Japan's ancient capital, Kyoto, is framed by a magnificent mountain backdrop. Established as the seat of the Imperial Court in the 8th Century, the city prospered in its role as the centre of government, commerce and the arts in Japan for more than ten centuries. To this day, Kyoto remains the cultural capital of Japan with its magnificent Buddhist heritage, and includes amongst its almost 2000 temples and shrines an astounding seventeen UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. Combined with its fascinating history, the current city's modern infrastructure and services fit the needs of its over 40 million annual visitors. (What about a brewery I hear you say? well have you tried sake?)

CLIMATE AND CLOTHING The weather during the Congress period, March, is generally mild with an average daily temperature range of 9.7BC (48BF) to 10.7BC (50BF). Accordingly, participants are recommended to bring a sweater or light coat. The Kyoto International Conference Hall and all of the city's major hotels are fully heated and air-conditioned.

SHOPPING A variety of shopping opportunities can be found in Kyoto. Traditional arts and crafts, such as Kiyomizu pottery and Yuzen-dyed fabrics, can be purchased from many of downtown Kyoto's numerous shops. First-rate department stores are located throughout the city and offer many opportunities for browsing and the purchase of items unique to Japan and the Kyoto area. A 5% consumption tax will be applied to almost all consumer purchases made in Japan. (Sure Visas, Bankcard & Amex are all accepted.)

WEBSITE A variety of additional information on Kyoto's history, natural beauty, convention facilities, hotels, transportation, art, cuisine and festivals can be found at the following website - Convention City Kyoto: http://web.kyoto-inet.or.jp/org/hellokcb/index.html (Good site to register.)
