The world’s leading chefs will convene in Queenstown to take part in the inaugural Southern Alpine Gourmet Summit which features the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS) Forum as well as the Junior World Chef’s Challenge.

To take place from 23-30 July, the Summit has been organised by renowned local chef, Grant Jackson of Boardwalk Seafood Restaurant and president of the Southland/Otago branch of the New Zealand Chefs Association.

“This is an incredibly exiting event for Queenstown,” he said. “It’s the first time the WACS Forum has been held outside of Asia and also the first time the Junior World Chefs Challenge has been held in the South Island. We’re expecting some very prestigious chefs to attend, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge.”

Grant Jackson explains he wants to get the whole community involved in the Gourmet Summit, not just chefs. To this end, there will be two Master classes open to the general public in Queenstown’s O’Connell’s Shopping Centre and local school children will be invited to enter their culinary creations for judging by the panel of international judges who will also preside over the Junior World Chefs Challenge.

Local chefs will be able to sit in on the WACS Forum and listen to such prestigious speakers as Peter Knipp and Shiro Deguchi, the Asian director of WACS. The New Zealand Chefs Association will hold its AGM and there will also be a HANZ Masterclass with a Bar Tenders presentation and keynote speaker.

The week culminates in spectacular style with the Southern Alpine Gourmet Summit Gala Dinner at the Millennium Hotel where the results of the World Junior Chefs’ Challenge will be announced as well as the first ever New Zealand Culinary Awards.
