New Zealand Food & Beer Promotion
Shanghai 2000

By Gary Miller
Executive Chef, Christchurch Casino
Part 1
Coming off of the back of Conference 2000 and the Taste of Canada Dinner I had three days to get my stuff together for the trip to Shanghai. Sounds easy enough!!!!!!!
Get returning residents visa, collect uniforms and equipment from work, get my Steinlager shirts laundered, spend time with my children; Tyler and Hayden, spend time with Elizabeth. Get my old apartment cleaned and ready for the final move to the new house (a big thank you here to Darryl Morris and the guys from GH Morris and Sons for their help with the shifting), Conference 2000 Committee meeting. Get packed, check and re-check everything. ATD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Ensure I’ve covered all my bill payments whilst away, send out e-mails asking people not to email me until I get back and then view all the photo’s and video clips from Conference 2000. (A big thank you to Dwayne and Karina Francks for all their work on these and these will be available on the net very soon. All 250 of them.
Get to the airport on Thursday morning with half hour to spare and then I’m informed that the flight to Auckland is delayed by 1 hour, a foreboding of things to come.
Get to Auckland to be met by Scoop Cordes, have a tour around the TPL Empire, check the layout for the September edition of Hospitality, the Monteith’s article looks really good, but then I would say that!!! Wouldn’t I??
We are due to meet Kerri Bell for lunch but she is stuck on a shopping spree with a declined credit card, I mean stuck in traffic in New Market. So we duly head off to Gailbraith’s Ale House, voted one of the best pubs in the world by no other than the beer guru himself, Michael Jackson. And we aren’t talking Wacko Jacko here.
Kerri tracks us down, well where else would two ale-supping geezers be hangin out.
If you get the chance to visit Gailbraith’s you have got to try the Benediction Ale, especially if someone else is paying. After lunch, which wasn’t all-liquid we head off to the airport, stopping off on the way to see Blair Knill at Europacific Foods. I have never seen Blair break out of a meeting and move so fast as when he was informed that Mr. James Oliver and Gordon Ramsey were wishing to see him at reception. After a brief chat about Conference it’s back off to the airport.
